New tool provides near-real-time data on business conditions in the region served by the Cleveland Fed

The public can now access near-real-time data on regional business conditions using a new Cleveland Fed charting tool built from the Survey of Regional Conditions and Expectations, or SORCE.

The SORCE indexes have helped inform the Cleveland Fed’s Beige Book and monetary policy efforts for more than a decade. They reveal what businesses in the Federal Reserve’s Fourth District are saying about demand, prices, costs, employment, wages, capital expenditures, and future expectations.

SORCE data is timely: It’s collected every six weeks, and the indexes will be released roughly three weeks later, soon after the release of the Beige Book.

The current data set runs from 2014 through 2024. It shows how business conditions plunged with the onset of COVID-19, rose dramatically as the pandemic subsided, and then moderated in more recent years. The next update is scheduled for March 5.

The data is collected via a survey of business and community leaders in the Fourth District, which includes Ohio, western Pennsylvania, eastern Kentucky and the northern tip of West Virginia.
